Papers consist of plantation journals, accounts, school papers, speeches, genealogical materials, and other items. Two plantation journals (1861-1873) for Silk Hope Plantation contains lists of workers, accounts with workers noting the amount of rice harvested, yearly reports on crops of rice and corn, lists of supplies purchased, and lists of clothing for slaves and workers. Account book (1874-1886) of Gabriel E. Manigault and his brother Louis Manigault concerns household expenses for groceries, sundry items, and wages for servants. There are also accounts (1885) of repairs made to Gabriel E. Manigault's house at 6 Gibbes Street in Charleston. Speeches concern subjects such as connoisseurship and painting. School papers include essays, poetry, and a geometry exercise. Other items include a list and catalog8563 family papers. of South Carolina portraits exhibited at the Cotton States and International Exposition in Atlanta, Ga.; a list of miniatures painted by E.G. Malbone and Charles Fraser; drafts of an advertisement or article about the sale of a portrait by Madame Vigee-LeBrun; a lease agreement between the Carolina Art Association and Eleanor T. Wragg; an essay about Madeira wine and its consumption in South Carolina and Georgia; a petition (1882) to the U.S. Congress concerning a bust of Lafayette; instructions on playing a pedal harp; recipes; and clippings concerning wine and winemaking. Genealogical materials include notes on the Manigault and Heyward families, epitaphs of Horry family members, and a genealogical chart of Heyward and Manigault family connections.
